Warhorse: Colt’s venerable New Service revolver (VIDEO)

Warhorse: Colt’s venerable New Service revolver (VIDEO)

With a lineage that ranged from the Spanish-American War to Vietnam, the New Service was Colt’s premier double-action revolver long before the company moved into the snake gun business.

With over 350,000 of these hearty six-shooters made between 1898 and the 1940s, the New Service started off in such vintage black powder cowboy chamberings as .38-40, .44-40 and .44 Russian but was soon upgraded to the more modern .38 Special, .45 ACP (using moon clips) and finally .357 Magnum over the course of its career.

In the above special by American Rifleman, the high points of the iconic wheel gun’s military, police, and commercial life are covered — including the often-imitated customized Fitz Special carry gun.
