Winner of the largest handgun contract issued in recent years, the Army’s M17 is a little different from the guns that preceeded it.

Going for a deep dive on the military’s Modular Handgun System contract, which led to the adoption of a variant of Sig Sauer’s P320 as the M17, is Chris Bartocci with Small Arms Solutions who compares the gun side-by-side in the above video with the Glock 19X, which also hails from the same program.

The P320 uses an internal stainless steel fire control unit, which can be swapped out between frames. That, various-sized magazines, and the interchangeable palm swells went a long way towards meeting the “modular” part of the MHS contract. Further, a standard feature of the M17 is night sights and a top plate for a red dot which was a request from the military and is a big leap over legacy M9 and M11 handguns in the Pentagon’s inventory.

With more on an optic-equipped Sig, Tim Harmsen with the Military Arms Channel using a P320-M17 complete with a DeltaPoint Pro.
