Detective’s gun left in Burger King bathroom leads to arrest of homeless man

A homeless Florida man was charged Saturday with one count of theft of a firearm after he came across a handgun left behind by a local lawman.

David Scott Haney, 49, was booked into Land O’ Lakes Detention Center on $5,000 bond according to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office after the handgun in question was recovered in a wooded area following a search. Haney came to the public eye when surveillance footage from the New Port Richey Burger King was posted by the agency online Friday listing him in association with a missing .40-caliber pistol “removed without permission from the bathroom.”

The gun belonged to a PCSO detective that has not been identified. The agency has not said if he will face any disciplinary action.

Haney is charged with a felony of the third degree, which is punishable under state law by five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000. He is still listed in custody as of Monday morning.
